It is hard to distinguish what is real and what is not in Josh Sommers’ world. The California-based artist/photographer creates unbelievably surreal scenes that will make your brain melt.
Life Beings at 2AM is a series of self-portraits that New York-based actor Kam Khan thought up one late night. As he was browse through the web, he found one image that he liked. Curious to see if he could duplicate it himself, he decided to “reverse engineer” the photo, setting up a stage in his living room. Then…in his lyric..this is what happened:
“I grabbed my trustworthy Rebel and started shooting. Standing there in my living room I familiarized the lights, checked the settings, checked against the master photo, and was cheerily surprised by the results. The next night the same thing happened. This time with a different lighting setups, all with me standing in my living room. By the third night I got blase of just standing there and started to spin a nun chuck.
Though Raleigh, North Carolina-based Valerie Chiang is not a efficient photographer (somewhat, she is a student at Oberlin Conservatory studying piano performance), her photos have an simplicity to them that certainly speak volumes. Like Flickr photographer Chiang, Lucy Nuzum is able bring to life the intangible, capturing our flying youth in a sweet and vulnerable way.
Paris-based photographer Thomas Ciszewski summons our inner compulsion to set things on fire and creates human dragons in this set he titles “Hot Spot.” The contrast between fire and the dark background is impressive. One has to wonder how hot the scenes get and what type of flammable liquid they are spewing out. Ciszewski currently works as a creative director at a digital agency in Paris.
