Tree Trunks Burst Through Gallery Walls

Brazilian artist Henrique Oliveira shows absolutely no respect to art galleries’ walls! It’s as if he has the supernatural ability to control trees, making them burst through the walls at his own whim.

When Oliveira was a student in São Paulo, there was a plywood fence outside his window that began to peel and fade into different layers and colors. The wood, called tapumes in Portuguese, is ubiquitous in the Brazilian city. When the fence was dismantled, Oliveira collected the remains and used them as raw materials for his senior show.

Now, as a professional artist, Oliveira has clearly stepped up his game. After scavenging the dumpsters of São Paulo, the artist paints peels of wood after they are curled onto a PVC pipe skeleton. Oliveira chooses wood pieces that are already splitting and dying because they perfectly represent the decay of life in the city.

Contemplative Window-Peeking Souls

Frank Neu’s collection, Reflection, is completely captivating. It consists of women looking lost, deep in thought as they peer through the window. The separation created by the window makes the viewer feel almost distant from the subject in the photograph. The dazed stares also adds to this effect, making Neu’s photographs seem very eerie, yet in a beautiful way. The blue hues and reflection in the windows, makes the some of the photos appear like double exposures, adding a dreamy feeling.

Green Army Men x Skateboarders Mashup

Jim Alfaro just wrote to us to tell us about Toy Boarders, essentially a mashed up version of plastic green army men and skateboarders he’s created. Like the Kidrobot breakdanders, these figurines are reminiscent of those iconic plastic toys that were popular in the 1970s and 1980s. Each of the eight riders represent real moves that are used by today’s riders like tail grab and ollie.
